Superintendent Danny Adkins reports on the success of the first Shattered Glass Camp in Floyd County Schools.


Brooke Whitlow from Nelson County Schools and Brandy New from Hardin County Schools are the dynamic team that make up Shattered Glass. While currently serving as the Creative Media Director for Nelson County Schools, Whitlow is an experienced educator and trainer. New brings her experience and training to her role as the Instructional Technology Coordinator for her district. Their passion for engaging students and their desire to continue to grow in their profession led them to creating an opportunity for students. Seeing women underrepresented in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers, Whitlow and New began creating Shattered Glass, with a goal of bringing STEM to as many girls as possible in order for their interests and skills to be developed.


Adkins comments, “Our Shattered Glass Camp was a huge success and we plan to bring it and more opportunities centered on STEM to Floyd County. We appreciate our CIO Denise Isaac for helping orchestrate this camp. Not only were our students engaged, our teachers were too. Twelve teachers completed training and assignments online prior to the camp.” Adkins continues, “A teacher from every school led stations at the camp and these teachers now have kits to use in their classrooms and to use to teach other teachers in their buildings. We had high school teachers complete the training and work together to learn how to use and bring the kits they received into their science and math classes. We want to thank all these teachers for their time and energy with this project.”


Shattered Glass Camp allowed students to learn about circuits, coding, conductivity, programming and more. At the force and motion station, students programmed a constant acceleration and direction, designed a tractor encasing and then tested how adding different masses affected the unit. One project for the high school teachers was to build a working-throwing arm to utilize in learning quadratics in algebra and/or prosthetics and limb/joint movement in biology.


Adkins concludes, “We want our students to have opportunities in STEM as it is the fastest growing career field. We also know that students are more involved in lessons that include things like Spheros, Ozobots, Maky Maky and more. And when students are more engaged, more learning is taking place.”


Teachers at the training were Amy Newsome (AMS), Daneque Branson (AES), Andrea Meade (BLES), Rachel Mullins (BLHS), Joseph Larrimore (DACE), Christina Crase and Cortney Kidd (FCHS), Mika Justice (JMS), Crystal Akers (MVES), Taylor Bragg (PES), Charles Rowe (PHS), and Brandi Slone (SFES).
