Superintendent Danny Adkins congratulates the Floyd County students who excelled in the 2019 State Student Technology Leadership Program competition at Rupp Arena on April 18.

Adkins began saying, “Congratulations Allen Elementary Forget Me Not team and Coach Mike Bell for being back-to-back State Middle School Champions! This purpose of this outstanding project, Forget Me Not, is to remind parents that their child is still buckled in the car seat. Their goal was to save lives! The device can sound an alarm when the temperature inside a vehicle gets too hot or too cold and can notify parents on their phone if they are ten or more feet away from the car seat.” Adkins continues, “Our Floyd County team is very proud of this team’s state champion title but we are more proud of this group of kids wanting to save lives!”

The team is traveling to Philadelphia for their national presentation and competition in June. Team members include Tanner Skeens, Bradley Jervis, Lexi Blair, Ethan McIntosh, Peyton Senters, Justin Akers, Reese Music, Keegan Farley and Timothy Mahan.

Adkins adds, “Two other Allen Elementary teams were in the top 27 in the state! AES Cares and Eagle Radio 92.7 both made it to Level 3!” Speaking of the high school level, Adkins says, “We also want to say how proud we are of two other teams for making it to Level 3 which means these teams were in the top eighteen in the state! Congratulations Betsy Layne High School 3-D Hologram team and Coach Sandy Mims and Floyd Central High School Broaden Your Horizons team and Coach CaSandra Fulks! We are so excited to have three of the top eighteen teams in Kentucky come from Floyd County!”

The BLHS 3-D Hologram uses a television/computer monitor and computer to project a replica of an image into a container built from Plexiglas.  Teachers can use 3-D Hologram to projected an image and augment the lesson. For example, a teacher may project an image of a heart as the lobes of the heart are discussed. Team members are Landon Howard, Bretton Jervis, Chris Brashear and Jonah Bell.

FCHS Broaden Your Horizons wants to inform the community of jobs and job opportunities. The focus of the project is to help students that are just entering the workforce, adults who need jobs  due to the closing of the coal industry, and adults moving to the community, find suitable employment. Broaden Your Horizons wants to change unemployment in our region and help students choose their careers and colleges. Team members are Belle Stewart, Savanna Price, Chloe Watson, Sahara Little, Reece Terry, Kelli Thomas and Alyssa Tackett.

AES Cares has four components. Two components involve people outside the school. The first is care cases for children placed in foster care and the second is a blessing box located outside the gates at the school for the community members to pick up supplies and food if they are in need. The other two components involve helping incise the school. These two are Homework Helps, an in school and after school tutoring program lead by middle school students, and FRYSC Assistants, students helping the resource center with packing snacks, handing out flyers and organizing the storeroom. Team members are Coresha Smith, Courtney Meadows, Ruthie Dillion and Natalie Garrett.

Lastly, Eagle Radio 92.7 is an on campus radio station that broadcast school announcements and activities on a FM signal just on the campus grounds.  This year, Eagle Radio was able to construct their own server to host and stream their broadcast on the internet. Team members are Shian Crum, Sidney Chaffins, Areica Salisbury and Alyson Kilburn.

Adding to the list of students serving on the State Service Teams, Adkins comments, “Congratulations Reece Hamilton from Adams Middle on being part of the Live Production Team! Reece was one of sixteen students in the state selected to be on this team!”

The STLP State Championship relies on the help of State Service Teams to run the event. From providing updates throughout the day via social media, or working with the KET Production Team to broadcast the event, to providing important technical support, the STLP State Service Teams play a vital role in the success of the event. The Blogger Corps and the Media Arts Team each consist of ten members from around the state.

Superintendent Adkins concludes saying, “We’re very proud of our students who competed at state and made Floyd County Schools a standout! We’re excited about providing opportunities like this for all students to find their passion and excel!”
