Superintendent Danny Adkins is happy to announce that the Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program selected four Floyd County students as candidates. The Kentucky Governor’s Scholar Program is an enhanced summer learning program for students going into their senior year of high school. Along with an incredible experience that is free of charge to those who attend, students receive scholarships that average more than $60,000, depending on the college/university the student selects.

The students selected are:

  • Aariana Sparks, Betsy Layne High School
  • Chad Bates, Floyd Central High School
  • Logan Turner, Floyd Central High School
  • Cameron Goble, Prestonsburg High School

The process for selection as a Governor’s Scholar is detailed and competitive. Written essays, the quality of grades and test scores are some of what the judges consider. Our best applicants then compete with students from across Kentucky. This year, 1,863 applied to be Governor’s Scholars with a little over half of the applicants selected.

Superintendent Adkins commented on this opportunity, “Congratulations Aariana, Chad, Logan and Cameron! Being selected to be a Governor’s Scholar from an outstanding pool of candidates is a prestigious honor.  Our Floyd County team is very proud of these students not only for becoming Governor’s Scholars, but also for their drive, their dedication and their tenacity. It takes three years of hard work to be a viable candidate for Governor’s Scholar and that ability to set a goal and work towards it, no matter how hard the journey gets sometimes, is a commendable quality in itself.”

Adkins continued saying, “We want to see all of our students with good grades and test scores talking to their guidance counselors about the Governor’s Scholar Program. While you apply when you’re a junior in high school, students really need to begin working toward this as freshmen in order to be more competitive. And we want all of our students asking, “What’s out there for me?” We know that high school students are more successful when they are working toward their individual goals, and becoming a Governor’s Scholar is just one of the great opportunities for students.”
